Why Choose an Animal Behaviorist?
|
 |
Specialization in companion animal behavior
Many behavior problems in companion animals are complex, consisting of many interrelated factors, which require in-depth evaluations and accurate treatment protocols. Choosing a specialist, one who focuses primarily on behavior, ensures that you will receive the best help that is available in the field of animal behavior. Look for someone with a graduate degree in a behavioral science, professional experience with animals, and a proven track record.

No one size fits all approach
There are many books available that are geared to help pet owners in the areas of health, care, and behavior. While some are very good, many others are inaccurate or rely on old, unhealthy, and inhumane treatment methods that are no longer fitting in today's society. We recommend reading the good books out there mainly to educate yourselves on general dog and cat behavior, proper care, exercise, nutrition, and an overview of the types of behavior problems out there, which can provide the "thank goodness, I'm not the only one" relief response.
However, it is unlikely that you will be able to solve your pet's problems just by reading a book. The problem with seeking answers for your pet's behavior problems in books is that you are only going to find "cookbook" fixes - a one size fits all approach to problem behavior. As mentioned earlier, problem behaviors come in all shapes and sizes, with many interrelated factors. Cookbook fixes aren't likely to give you the best chance at successful resolution.
A common result of this type of "self-help" is that people think they have tried everything and that nothing works. No wonder. We ought to give the animal the best chance of a successful and permanent behavioral change, if for no other reason than the fact that most people are already at their wits end before they even start behavior modification programs; not to mention the more alarming fact that many people give up (as in put the animal to sleep, give it away, drown it, etc.) before they even realize there was help available to them.

Time-intensive evaluations
Behavior problems require in-depth evaluations of the history of the pet, the examination of the environmental factors, the analysis of the specific behaviors, and a well thought out treatment plan. We are often more like detectives than psychologists, digging for clues, piecing it all together, coming up with "ah-ha's", and delivering an easy to follow, practical treatment plan to the pet owner. Optimally, a set period of time for follow up provides the additional support people and pets need for permanent change.

Personalized counseling/One on one help
We cannot emphasize enough the importance of personalized, one on one counseling. In person is ideal, by phone or email certainly an option, so long as the person with the problem pet can connect with another who is concerned, caring, and experienced at both counseling and the field of animal behavior.
Optimal chance of success
Your pet deserves the best chance of a happy and fulfilling life with you. The sheer number of pets that are euthanized for behavior problems is atrocious. In fact, it is downright unacceptable. We are here to change that, one pet at a time.
